The One Awards recognize and share the ingenuity of aspiring professionals to the joint benefit of Hydro One and its customers. This program highlights career pathways into the energy sector and supports student development through financial awards and work opportunities.

William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award

The William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award honors the legacy of William Peyton Hubbard, a civic leader instrumental in public control of hydroelectric power in Ontario and Toronto’s first Black Alderman and Acting Mayor. Hydro One sponsors this annual award to support outstanding Black undergraduate students enrolled at Ontario colleges or universities in energy-related disciplines. Recipients receive a cash prize and are eligible for a paid developmental work term with Hydro One.

Description: An annual award recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and interest in energy industry careers among Black undergraduate students in Ontario.

History of the Award: Named for William Peyton Hubbard to commemorate his contributions to public utilities and civic leadership in early 20th-century Toronto.

Award Value

The memorial award provides financial support alongside experiential learning opportunities. Four awards of $5,000 each are available to eligible recipients. Awardees are also offered the opportunity to obtain a paid developmental work term with Hydro One and are invited to an awards luncheon where the monetary award is presented.

Eligibility & Criteria

Applicants must meet defined demographic and academic criteria to be considered for the award. The program is specifically for Black students as defined by the award guidelines, including those who identify as bi-racial or mixed heritage and those with a family connection to the Black community. Academic, leadership, and communication standards are required, and documentation must be provided with the application.

Eligibility: Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants enrolled full-time in an accredited Ontario university or college, returning to school, and have completed at least two years in an undergraduate program in specified fields.

Academic & Supporting Requirements: Minimum B+ GPA, demonstrated leadership and community or campus involvement, strong oral and written communication skills, and submission of an unofficial transcript and updated resume.

• Defined demographic scope: Black, Black-identifying, or connection through one/both parents.
• Must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants enrolled full-time in an accredited Ontario post-secondary institution.
• Program areas: Engineering/Technology (Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental), IT, or Business; minimum two years completed.
• Minimum B+ GPA, leadership experience, and required documentation (transcript and resume).

Selection & Timeline

Applications are reviewed after the November 1 deadline by Hydro One management and a selection process determines finalists. Top candidates are short-listed and interviewed, then ranked by interview scores to determine the winners. Winners are notified and invited to an awards luncheon for presentation of the monetary award.
